Camper FAQs

1. WHAT IF I GET HOMESICK?
Don’t worry, everyone gets homesick sometimes (even your counselors and us, the directors) and that is ok. Here at Camp Gideon, you will be surrounded by an incredible group of staff members that are all there to make sure you have the best summer possible. Any time you feel a little bit homesick, we are going to get you up and involved in some of the wildest, craziest, most fun activities you can imagine.

2. WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO CAMP?
After you are registered to come to camp, we will send you a packing list telling you everything you will need for the specific week of camp that you chose to come to. Pay attention, because some camps have a slightly different list than others!

3. WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW ANYONE AT CAMP WHEN I GET THERE?
Part of going to camp is all about meeting new people, making new friends and sharing experiences you will remember and talk about for the rest of your life. As soon as you get to camp, you will meet your bunkmates and counselors and before you know it, you will have made great friends. We are one big family at Camp Gideon, and everyone gets to know absolutely everyone!

5. WHAT IS THERE TO EAT AT MEALTIMES?
Mealtime is a special thing here at Camp Gideon. Most of our meals are done family style, so you don’t have to scramble at a buffet for food, and our food is prepared right before you eat it. We have fresh fruits and veggies from the area, and our cooks are excellent Amish ladies and seasoned kitchen workers. Don’t forget our traditional spaghetti dinner with no silverware!

6. DO I GET TO CHOOSE ACTIVITIES?
It depends on the camp. For instance, Day Camp is completely scheduled, so you don’t have to worry about what great activity is next. Most of our camps have several times a day where you can choose what you want to do or what you want your cabin to do together.

7. WHAT IS THERE TO DO AT CAMP?
There is so much to do at camp! We have all sorts of games, sports areas, hiking, archery, canoeing, and loads of other traditional camp activities. We are even introducing new games this year like Gaga Ball and 9 Ball. Not to mention Capture the Flag, Lip-Sync, and other All Camp Activities. If there is something that you would like to see at camp, don’t be afraid to tell us! We are always looking for new and exciting things to try!

8. WHAT DO WE DO AT NIGHT?
Every evening we have something called an All Camp Activity, or ACA. Most of the time at camp, you will be doing things with your cabin, but for this time, the entire camp comes together and takes part in a huge activity. Two favorites are Capture the Flag and Lip-Sync, but others have been Predators, Counselor Hunt, Romans and Christians, and Snakes. We are even looking into trying some twists on the classics you know and love!

9. DO WE GO ON TRIPS?
For Challenge Camps, we will take trips to facilities that will, well, challenge you in some way. All other camps stay on property. But don’t worry; there are 188 acres to explore, and lots of things to do!

10. WHAT IF MY BIRTHDAY IS DURING CAMP?
If your birthday happens while at camp, please let us know, and we would love to celebrate with you! The whole camp will sing happy birthday to you, and we will even have a special treat for you!

11. CAN I GET MAIL OR PACKAGES?
Without a doubt! Give your family and friends our address here: Camp Gideon, c/o “your name here”, PO Box 115, Mechanicstown, OH 44651, and we will deliver it to you at our daily mail time!

12. WHAT IF IT RAINS?
Rain does not stop the fun at Camp Gideon! Not only do we have a ton of indoor activities, but we also have gone into the rain do bag slide on our grassy hills, construct waterslides, splash through puddles, or simply play a game a different way in the rain!

13. WHAT IF I GET SICK?
If you get sick, we not only have trained staff, but we also just started a volunteer program for nurses to come down and be here at camp in case of injury or illness, so you will be well looked after.

14. WHERE DOES EVERYONE COME FROM?
Most of our campers come from Northeast Ohio, but we sometimes have campers from other states and we have even had campers from other countries before!

15. DO I HAVE TO WEAR A UNIFORM?
We give you a Camp Gideon T-shirt to wear for our picture time and on the last day of camp. Other than that, you are welcome to wear whatever you like, as long as it is modest and not revealing. This is camp, after all, so pack for comfort, not for style, because who knows when a game or mealtime might get messy?

16. WHO CAN I TALK TO IF I HAVE A QUESTION OR A PROBLEM?
During camp, you can talk to or ask any of our staff about whatever you want. They are here to make sure you have a great time, so they will be more than happy to help you. If they don’t know an answer, they will direct you to someone who can help you, or they will find out and get back to you. If you have any questions before or after camp, you can call or email us about it!

17. DO WE GET TO CAMP OUT AT NIGHT?
Of course! Adventure Camp has a tradition of sleeping outside at least one night, and for other weeks, your counselor would be more than willing to take you and your cabin out for a night under the brilliant stars here at Camp Gideon.

18. CAN I DECORATE THE BUNK?
Yes! While each counselor has their own unique cabin rules, you are encouraged to decorate your area as you wish. One popular idea is to make a camper mail box for your bunk so that you can give and receive notes!

19. HOW WILL I KNOW WHERE TO GO OR WHAT TO DO WHEN I GET TO CAMP?
The first thing that happens when you arrive is registration. We make sure we have all the paperwork we need in case of an emergency there. Once that is complete, a staff member takes you and your family to your cabin, where you meet your counselor and other campers in your cabin. Once your entire cabin has arrived and you are settled, you dive right into camp activities! If you have any questions, ask our staff, and they will help you get settled in.

20. WHAT IF I RUN OUT OF TOOTHPASTE OR SHAMPOO?
We keep extras on hand for just such an occurrence. Just let us know, and we will get it for you!

21. WHAT TIME IS WAKE UP?
Wake up depends on the camp you attend, but they are generally around 8:00.

22. WHEN DO I HAVE TO GO TO SLEEP?
Bedtime depends on what we do the night before, as some ACAs last longer than others, so we announce bedtime each night once the ACA has ended. We give you plenty of time to prepare for bed, and we make sure you get enough sleep to be awake and energized for the next day’s activities!

23. WHAT IF I FORGET TO BRING SOMETHING FROM HOME?
If you get to camp and there is anything you think you needed but left at home, don’t worry. We will call your parents and have it mailed to camp A.S.A.P. if it is something we don’t already have for you.
